1화. 피로 물든 보름달 아래 (Under the Blood-Red Full Moon)

조선 숙종 6년, 경기도 이천 장호원 이황리.

서늘한 봄밤, 마을 어귀에 짙은 안개가 내려앉았다. 대지엔 침묵이 깔렸고, 어둠 속에 검은 그림자가 미끄러지듯 스며들었다. 산기슭에 자리한 초가집 하나, 그 안에서는 아기를 품은 여인이 진통에 온몸을 떨고 있었다.
On a chilly spring night, thick fog descended on the outskirts of the village. Silence covered the land as dark shadows slithered through the darkness. In a thatched house at the foot of the mountain, a woman holding her child trembled in the throes of labor.

“무길아… 이리 오너라…”
"Musik... come here..."

이것은 이름이자, 운명이었다. 윤씨 성을 가진 아이, 윤무길의 탄생이었다.
This was both a name and a destiny. The birth of Yun Musik, a child of the Yun family.

아이의 첫 울음소리는 골짜기를 흔들었고, 그 메아리는 곧 장호원 들판에 잔잔히 흘러갔다. 하지만 같은 시각, 마을 서쪽 저잣거리에서는 피비린내가 감돌고 있었다. 포도청 군졸들이 나이 든 노인을 뭇매질하던 중이었다.
The baby's first cry shook the valley, and its echo soon spread gently across the fields of Janghowon. But at the same time, in the marketplace to the west of the village, the air was thick with the scent of blood. The magistrate's soldiers were beating an elderly man.

“세금이 없다 했지 않느냐! 자식들도 뿔뿔이 흩어지고, 먹을 것 하나 없어…”
"You said there were no taxes! Your children are scattered, and there is nothing to eat..."

노인은 끝내 숨을 거뒀고, 그 옆에서 이를 지켜보던 소년 하나의 눈동자가 붉게 타올았다.
The old man finally breathed his last, and the eyes of a boy standing nearby watching the scene ignited with a burning rage.

그 아이가 훗날 도적이 된다. 아니, 도적이 아닌 백성을 위한 칼을 든 자가 된다.

부자와 관리들이 나누어 가진 세상 속에서, 더 이상 뒤로 밀릴 수 없던 이들이 있었고, 그 선봉에 서게 되는 자가 있었으니… 바로 윤무길이다.
In a world where the rich and officials divided everything, there were those who could no longer be pushed back, and one of them would lead the way… that man was Yun Musik.

윤무길이 태어난 이황리는 조용하고 평화로운 곳이었다. 봄이면 복숭아꽃이 흐드러지고, 가을이면 들녘에 벼가 출렁였다. 마을 사람들은 순박하고 정직했지만, 세상은 점점 그들에게 등을 돌리고 있었다.
The village of Iwhang-ri, where Yun Musik was born, was quiet and peaceful. In spring, peach blossoms filled the air, and in autumn, the fields rippled with rice. The villagers were simple and honest, but the world was turning its back on them.

관아에서 내려온 세금은 해마다 늘어만 갔고, 수령과 아전들은 그 틈을 타 재산을 불렸다. 땅을 잃고 품팔이에 나선 이들이 많았고, 더는 낼 게 없는 백성들이 스스로 목숨을 끊기도 했다.
The taxes imposed by the government grew every year, and the magistrate and his officials took advantage of the situation to amass wealth. Many lost their land and had to work as laborers, while others, with nothing left to give, took their own lives.

“이리 굶어 죽을 바엔… 차라리 칼을 들지.”
"If I'm going to starve to death, I might as well take up a sword."

이 말은 마을 어귀에 모인 사내들 사이에서 심심찮게 들려오던 말이었다. 그 가운데 하나, 윤경수. 윤무길의 아버지다. 그는 나무꾼으로 평생을 살았지만, 착실한 삶이 굶주림을 이기지 못했다.
This was a phrase often heard among the men gathered at the edge of the village. One of them, Yun Gyeongsu, was the father of Yun Musik. He had lived his life as a woodcutter, but even his honest labor could not overcome the hunger.

무길이 태어날 무렵, 그는 고심 끝에 마을 뒷산에 잠입하여 관청의 사냥 금지 구역에서 사슴 한 마리를 몰래 잡았다.
When Musik was born, his father, after much deliberation, sneaked into the mountain behind the village and secretly hunted a deer from a protected area where hunting was forbidden by the government.

그날 밤, 군졸이 들이닥쳤고, 윤경수는 사지를 결박당한 채 포도청으로 끌려갔다. 무길은 태어나자마자 아버지 없는 집안의 장남이 되었다.
That night, soldiers stormed the house, and Yun Gyeongsu was bound and dragged away to the magistrate's office. Musik was left as the eldest son in a home without a father.

윤무길은 자라면서 세상을 먼저 미워하게 되었다. 밥상에 고깃국이 오르지 않는 이유, 어머니가 한겨울에도 솜옷을 입지 못하는 이유가, 누구 때문인지 어렴풋이 알기 시작한 것이다.
As Yun Musik grew, he began to despise the world. He started to understand why there was no meat soup on the table, why his mother could not wear cotton clothes even in the dead of winter. He started to understand who was to blame.

그의 첫 기억은, 어머니의 거친 손등과 뜨거운 눈물이었다. “무길아, 사람답게 살아라. 아버지처럼 되면 안 된다.”
His first memory was of his mother's rough hand and her warm tears. "Musik, live like a human being. Don't become like your father."

하지만 세상은 그를 그렇게 놔두지 않았다.
But the world would not leave him in peace.

장호원의 들판에서 그는 뛰어놀며 자라났지만, 땅을 팔아 생계를 이어가는 어머니의 등을 보며, 그는 남몰래 이빨을 깨물었다. 겨울이 오면 양식이 부족했고, 아이들은 병에 걸려 쓰러졌으며, 관아는 여전히 세금과 공물을 독촉했다.
He grew up playing in the fields of Janghowon, but watching his mother struggle to make a living after selling the land, he gritted his teeth in secret. In winter, food was scarce, children fell ill, and the government office continued to demand taxes and tributes.

열 살 무렵, 그는 뒷산에서 굶주린 포수를 도우며 처음으로 짐승의 피를 보았다. 그 피가, 무척 따뜻했다. 살기 위해 피를 본다는 것, 그것이 그의 삶의 첫 번째 교훈이었다.
Around the age of ten, he helped a starving hunter on the mountain and saw animal blood for the first time. The blood was warm. Seeing blood in order to survive—this was his first lesson in life.

그리고, 열두 살 되던 해. 윤무길은 어머니를 잃었다. 장티푸스였다. 약도, 의사도 없었다. 빈 소반 위에서 어머니는 서우의 손을 쥐고 마지막 말을 남겼다.
Then, at the age of twelve, Yun Musik lost his mother to typhoid. There were no medicines, no doctors. On an empty tray, his mother held his hand and spoke her final words.

“세상은… 절대 공평하지 않다. 하지만 넌… 넌 꼭 살아야 한다.”
"The world... is never fair. But you... you must live."

그는 무릎 꿇은 채 울지 않았다. 대신, 다음 날 새벽 짐을 꾸려 집을 떠났다. 이황리의 산 너머, 넓은 세상을 보기 위해.
He knelt but did not cry. Instead, the next morning, he packed his things and left the house. He was going to see the world beyond the mountains of Iwhang-ri.

이제 이야기는 시작된다.
